How the generator builds each map
Every map comes from a seed, a short phrase like ember-vault-412. The seed drives a random number generator, so the same seed always gives the same layout. Change it and you get a new map; share it and your co-GM sees exactly what you see.
Dungeons are cut with binary space partitioning: the map is split in half again and again, a room is placed in each piece, and corridors join sibling pieces so every room is reachable. Rooms get a theme (library, shrine, barracks, flooded chamber) and the furthest room from the stairs becomes the final chamber. Step through the process.
Caves start as random noise and are smoothed with a cellular automaton until tunnels and chambers appear, then only the largest connected cavern is kept so no area is sealed off. Taverns follow how real inns were laid out: common room at the front, kitchen and store behind, bar against the service wall. Forests get a trail, often a stream and a clearing, with undergrowth marked as difficult terrain. Throne rooms are symmetrical, built around a raised dais and a carpeted approach between pillars.
From generator to game night in three steps
- Generate. Pick a map type and press New map until one fits your encounter. Adjust width and height for the space you need.
- Edit. Paint terrain to add a pit or a pond, place tokens and props, remove furniture that blocks the fight you have in mind. Undo is always there.
- Export. Download a PNG at 70 px per square for Roll20 or 100 px for Foundry, or the .dd2vtt file that carries walls, doors and lights into Foundry VTT, Fantasy Grounds and Arkenforge.
Need monsters to go with the map? The encounter builder checks whether your group of goblins is a speed bump or a total party kill using the XP thresholds from the Dungeon Master’s Guide.
Questions game masters ask
Is this D&D battle map generator free?
Yes. Every map type, the editor, PNG export and the Universal VTT export are free with no account. Maps are drawn in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How do I use a generated map in Roll20?
Download the PNG at 70 pixels per square, drag it onto the Map & Background layer, right-click it and choose Advanced > Set Dimensions, then enter the width and height in squares shown under the map. The grid lines up without any manual alignment.
How do I use it in Foundry VTT?
Download the .dd2vtt file and import it with a Universal Battlemap Importer module. Walls, doors and light sources come across automatically. If you prefer the PNG, export at 100 pixels per square and set the scene grid size to 100.
Can I get the same map again?
Yes. Every map comes from its seed. Type the same seed, map type and size and you get an identical map, or use Copy map link to share it with your players or co-GM.
How big is each square?
One square is 5 feet, the standard for D&D 5e and Pathfinder. A 40 × 30 dungeon therefore covers 200 × 150 feet.
Can I print the maps?
Yes. At 1-inch squares a map needs one inch per square, so export at 140 pixels per square for sharp printing and print it across several sheets, or use the printable grid on the D&D grid page for hand-drawn maps.
