D&D Mine Map Generator

Where the dwarves dug too deep, or where the kobolds moved in after the miners fled. Roll a mine: straight worked shafts shored with timber, carts left at the face, ore veins and a camp of abandoned supplies.

A blank grid has no key yet. Paint some rooms and place props, and the read-aloud writer will describe what you drew.

Read-aloud writer

Turns this layout into boxed text to read at the table, plus three tactical hooks. Uses AI; the map itself never needs it.

Quick answer: Press New mine to roll a mine on 5-ft squares. Natural caverns are crossed by straight 10-ft shafts with timber supports, a cart at each working face, ore veins along the walls, a miners’ camp and a ladder to the surface.

How the mine is built

The generator first grows natural caverns the same way as the cave generator, then cuts straight shafts through the rock the way miners follow a seam. Timber supports line the shafts, a cart waits at the end of each, and ore veins appear on cave walls. The result reads as a natural cave that people have worked, which is how most fantasy mines are described.

Three ways to use this map

  1. The miners broke into something older than the mine.
  2. The ore glows, and so do the miners who touched it.
  3. A cart rolls out of the dark with no one pushing it.

Who lives here? Kobolds (CR 1/8), duergar (CR 1), a rust monster (CR 1/2) or an umber hulk (CR 5) breaking through a wall. Check the difficulty for your party in the encounter builder, then use the read-aloud writer under the map for boxed text.

Questions game masters ask

What is the difference between a cave map and a mine map?

A cave is entirely natural. A mine adds what people built: straight shafts, timber supports, carts, tools and a camp. The mine generator starts from a cave and adds those features.

What monsters live in a mine?

Kobolds, goblins, duergar, a rust monster drawn by the iron, or an umber hulk tunnelling through the walls. All appear in the SRD.

Can I add a cave-in?

Choose Add prop, pick Rubble and place it across a shaft, or paint Solid rock over squares to block the tunnel completely.
