A blank grid has no key yet. Paint some rooms and place props, and the read-aloud writer will describe what you drew.

Read-aloud writer

Turns this layout into boxed text to read at the table, plus three tactical hooks. Uses AI; the map itself never needs it.

Quick answer: Press New crypt to roll a tomb complex on 5-ft squares. Every map has a vestibule with stairs, themed tomb rooms joined by corridors and doors, and a final burial chamber with a great sarcophagus. Download a PNG or a .dd2vtt with walls and doors.

How the crypt is laid out

The crypt uses the same room-and-corridor method as the dungeon generator: the area is split into pieces, a room goes in each, and corridors connect neighbours so every room is reachable. The room nearest the top-left corner becomes the vestibule; the furthest becomes the burial chamber. Rooms in between are tomb halls with rows of sarcophagi, ossuaries, small chapels with pews, or tombs half-collapsed under rubble, and some hide a trap.

Three ways to use this map

  1. Grave robbers got here first; their bodies are in the ossuary and their killer is in the burial chamber.
  2. The family wants the heirloom from the great sarcophagus back, but the occupant still wears it.
  3. Every time someone rests, one sarcophagus lid has moved a little further.

Who lives here? Skeletons (CR 1/4), zombies (CR 1/4), ghouls (CR 1), a shadow or two (CR 1/2), and a wight (CR 3) or a mummy (CR 3) in the burial chamber. Check the difficulty for your party in the encounter builder, then use the read-aloud writer under the map for boxed text.

Questions game masters ask

How big should a D&D crypt map be?

A small family tomb fits in 20 × 16 squares (100 × 80 ft). A full crypt complex with five or six chambers needs about 36 × 28, the default here. Use the Size presets to switch between them.

What monsters live in a crypt?

Skeletons, zombies, ghouls, shadows and specters are the classic choices, with a wight or a mummy in the burial chamber for a boss fight. The encounter builder checks whether the group is balanced for your party.

Is a crypt different from a dungeon map?

The layout logic is the same, but the rooms are dressed as tombs: sarcophagi in rows, an ossuary, a chapel with pews and a burial chamber instead of a treasure room.
