Free D&D Map Maker
Sometimes the adventure calls for a room no generator would build: the collapsed bridge, the wizard’s octagonal study, the ship’s hold. Paint it yourself on a 5-ft grid with twelve terrain types and nearly thirty props, then export it for your table.

How to make a D&D battle map in five minutes
- Size the grid. Work out the space in feet and divide by five. A 60 × 40 ft hall is 12 × 8 squares; leave a margin of a few squares around it.
- Block in floors. Pick a floor (stone, wood, dirt, grass) and drag to fill the playable area. The default grid starts as stone floor; paint Void where nothing exists.
- Draw walls. Switch to Wall and trace the outline. Leave gaps where doors go.
- Add features. Water and undergrowth for difficult terrain, a dais or carpet for important spaces.
- Place props. Doors in the gaps, then furniture, pillars and hazards. Put a token or two where the enemies start.
Every feature should earn its square. If a table or pillar doesn’t give cover, block a line or tell the story of the room, remove it: busy maps slow down play.
Questions game masters ask
Is this D&D map maker free?
Yes, with no account and no watermark. You paint on a blank grid in your browser and download a PNG or a Foundry-ready .dd2vtt file.
How do I draw walls?
Choose Paint terrain, pick Wall and drag along the squares. For a room, paint the floor first, then outline it in wall. Walls export as vision-blocking walls in the .dd2vtt file.
Can I start from a generated map instead?
Yes. The battle map generator on the home page has the same editor, so you can roll a dungeon or tavern and then paint over it.
Will my map be saved?
Use Save in browser to keep up to 12 maps in this browser’s local storage. They never leave your device; clear them any time from the privacy page. Export a PNG to keep a permanent copy.
