Read-aloud writer
Quick answer: Press New library to roll a library on 5-ft squares: double doors, reading tables by the entrance, stacks of shelves with 5-ft aisles, and a locked archive room with a desk and a chest. Download it as PNG or .dd2vtt.
How the library is laid out
Libraries play like mazes of cover. The generator fills the main hall with stacks of shelves in rows, leaving 5-ft aisles between them, so line of sight is short and a creature can vanish one row over. A walled archive on one side is behind a locked door. Reading tables sit near the double doors, with a stair up to the gallery for a second level.
Three ways to use this map
- A book has been stolen, and the thief is still in the stacks.
- The librarian is a mimic. So is one of the shelves.
- The archive door opens only to someone who has returned every borrowed book.
Who lives here? Animated armor (CR 1), flying swords (CR 1/4), a rug of smothering (CR 2), a mimic (CR 2) or a mage (CR 6) with apprentices. Check the difficulty for your party in the encounter builder, then use the read-aloud writer under the map for boxed text.
Questions game masters ask
How do I run a fight in a library?
Use the shelves. They give total cover, so enemies can move unseen between rows; spellcasters have trouble finding targets, and rogues are at home. Fire is a real threat to everything in the room.
What lives in a D&D library?
Animated objects such as flying swords and rugs of smothering, a mimic, a guardian such as a shield guardian, or a mage and their apprentices. Check the balance in the encounter builder.
Can I add more floors?
Generate the same seed twice and edit one copy as the gallery level, or paint a balcony in the map maker. The stairs mark where the floors connect.
