Forest Battle Map Generator

The road through the woods is where half of all ambushes happen. Roll a forest battle map with a winding trail, a stream to ford, a campfire clearing, walls of undergrowth and trees thick enough to hide an archer behind.

Reading a forest map for tactics

Open woodland is not open ground. Every feature on the map changes how a turn plays:

  • Tree trunks block movement and give half cover. Large trees (2 × 2 squares) can give three-quarters cover.
  • Undergrowth (the dark, dense patches) is difficult terrain. Stealthy monsters love it; heavily armoured fighters do not.
  • The stream is difficult terrain except at the ford where the trail crosses it, which makes the ford a natural chokepoint.
  • The fallen log gives half cover to anyone crouched behind it and makes a good defensive line for the party.
  • The clearing is the only place where a spellcaster gets clean lines for area spells.

Planning the ambush for after dark? Whether a full or a crescent Moon hangs over the trail decides how much of this map sits in dim light; ahaboo shows, step by step, why the Moon cycles through those phases.

Questions game masters ask

What is on a forest battle map?

A dirt trail, often a stream with a ford, a clearing with a campfire, patches of thick undergrowth, large and small trees, bushes, boulders, stumps and a fallen log. All placed on a 5-ft grid.

Do trees give cover in 5e?

A tree trunk typically gives half cover (+2 AC and Dexterity saves), or three-quarters cover for a thick old trunk. Dense foliage lightly obscures, giving disadvantage on Perception checks that rely on sight.

Is undergrowth difficult terrain?

Yes. Thick brush costs 1 extra foot of movement for every foot moved. The darker green patches on the map mark it.

How do I run a forest ambush?

Hide the attackers in the undergrowth on both sides of the trail, let the party reach the ford (water slows them), and have archers use the tree line for cover. Roll a bandit or goblin group on the encounter builder.
